I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers. - L.M. Montgomery
Dear Friends,
October is here in New Mexico, and here that means marigold garland in all shades of golden orange, the smell of roasting green chile, changing yellow aspens in the mountains, and colorful hot air balloons filling the sky.
Somehow my calendar is always a bit too full this time of year. The fall season feels so fleeting, and I have the nagging feeling that I’m missing it. Sometimes, I do almost miss it.
Last evening, faced with this nagging feeling, I hurriedly grabbed my bike and pedaled down to the Bosque - the stretch of forest by the Rio Grande and close to my house. The sun was close to setting and the moon was full. On my bike, I stopped by the river, noted the water was far too low for comfort, and paused at the datura lilies that sprawled along the edges of the path, their white blooms echoing the moon. I pedaled around a corner and not five feet away from me was a coyote. We made brief eye contact, and it turned and trotted towards the water and I exhaled loudly - realizing I was holding my breath.
I had felt a pull in my heart to drop what I was doing and go out and experience the natural world, and though I was out for less than an hour, it was refreshing and grounding. When the world outside is feeling chaotic and when my inner world is feeling jumbled, getting outside and into nature and actually listening to the feelings that build in the back of my mind is my best way to get out of my head and lean into the magical moments that make life worth experiencing. To think if I had missed that moon, those lilies, that coyote!
This October marks a shift in seasons, but also a shift for me personally as I revisited and simplified the stationery kits that I’ve sent out every month for the last 42 months. If you are new here - welcome. I hope this kit is a cozy retreat and encouragement to connect with people you care about. If you have been around for a while - thank you for sticking around and believing in the magic of snail mail and art for bringing people together.
To the magic in the everyday,
Jen
